The French-Israeli painter Daniel Enkaoua, who settled in Barcelona almost twenty years ago, researches the human figure with an unusual intensity. By following the same models year after year and by magnifying their vulnerability, the artist endows his characters with a capacity for a fascinating irradiation, both chromatic and psychological; it is a simultaneously powerful, material and spiritual presence.
In Enkaoua’s artwork, human figures are found at the intersection between two other themes which interest him: the humble object, still lifes with an impressive simplicity and density; and the landscape, bright, ascetic immensities that create an especially eloquent mirror of the Israeli deserts and the vastness of the Penedès and Catalonia.
This exhibition, curated by the writer Grégoire Polet, brings together the essence of Enkaoua’s work, in addition to earlier works that are considered to be indispensable.

The special exhibition Nature & Symbol focuses on issues of identity and existence as well as on questions relating to the search for the “where from” and “where to” of our ephemeral lives that flow through space and time. Four artistic stances from the ALBERTINA’s collection of drawings and prints make especially clear the influence had by artists’ respective genders, generations, and origins on their creative output, for which reason this presentation centers on the juxtaposition of 20 works by Franz Gertsch, Christiane Baumgartner, Ofer Lellouche, and Kiki Smith—all of them acquisitions and donations of the past two decades.
This selection of works also shows how the digital and analog worlds as well as reality and imitation have been dealt with from an immensely broad diversity of perspectives.
On view from 6 August until 13 September 2020

Singalovsky is this year’s winner of the Lauren and Mitchell Presser Photography Award for a Young Israeli Artist, which includes a grant and a solo exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art in 2020.
The judges noted that “Eli Singalovski creates a typological photographic research that charts the heritage of modern Brutalist architecture, of post-war architecture in Eastern Bloc countries, in Germany and in Israel. Through photography he examines complex urban processes that took place in Israel and in Europe following WWII, among them the ever-growing polarization between East and West and the urgent need for rebuilding constructions for institutions and for living accommodation. Singalovski photographs buildings at night, using long exposure, in dramatic black-and-white and centered compositions that capture the whole structure. He isolates the photographed buildings from their environment and neutralizes ‘distractions’ and interferences, in order to focus the viewer’s gaze on the façade of the architectural object, with its plethora of details against black, opaque skies. The choice to use this method of photography emphasizes the buildings’ monumentality and plasticity and features them as sculptural presences in the expanse, without human figures, whose absence is one component in a rich utterance of alienation in the modern contemporary era.”

Language shapes our perception of reality. It lets us describe, reflect and recreate.
