PRESS RELEASE
Sara Benninga : Mixed Figures - online viewing room
Jan 25 – Mar 6, 2022
Litvak Contemporary is pleased to present Sara Benninga: Mixed Figures, an online viewing room featuring the works of Jerusalem-based artist. Benninga's vivid, oil paintings depict figurative scenes over geometric and abstract backgrounds.
Synthesizing human figures from her personal life, together with cultural and media influences, interiors, patterns, and lines, Benninga builds multi-dimensional scenes over the canvas. The scenes, which contain abundance of happenings, are not coherent but rather disruptive and fragmental. Allegedly, a big secret is being revealed, but it is not quite clear what exactly is happening. By mixing abstract and concrete forms, the narratives are always present. However, there is no intention for the viewer to come to a coherent reading of the painting. The paintings reflect a search. Benninga explores themes that come to her attention through drawings, prints and paintings, mixing those with cultural commentary. She uses different methods to construct her figures and the spaces they inhabit on the canvas; She undoubtedly relates to art history, and yet, she's following no rule. Each painting is freshly constructed and embodies the process and issues of the present. Thus, she diverts the authoritative, academic gaze, and creates place for an inner gaze in her paintings. Interpretation becomes the key, and yet, these paintings resist a definitive one.
